Sustainable Fashion, Fact or Fiction?

Updated: Jun 6, 2023

When we talk about eco-friendly, sustainable fabric and packaging - how much do we really know about it?

Last week I attended the Fashion Summit at The Mills, there was a group of panel speakers discussing the upcoming trends and info on sustainability in packaging and textiles. To say I was blown away is an understatement. Eco-fashion, sustainable fabrics, packaging are in demand from consumers to manufacturers, but how much of it is as sustainable as they say, and how much do we as the end user really know about it?

Here's a couple of things I wanted to touch on....

#1 - Opting for sustainable packaging

There's been an upward trend on online shopping especially since the pandemic, with the increase in online shopping the use of extra packaging is on the rise too.

Doesn't it feel like Christmas morning when you hear your doorbell ring and see your best friend (the delivery person) at the door holding your packages....your heart starts to beat faster, your pupils dialate as you carefully tear open each layer of packaging your items come in....but how much of that is just waste and how much of your packaging is actually eco-friendly?

At Flow With Me all of our wrapping and hang tags are '100% circular and can be composted or recycled after use' check out NoIssue to find out more. We also use mailer bags that are re-useable; I personally love using them to pack up my sweaty activewear after a gruelling workout sesh, or to pack up wet clothes from a fun day out on the beach. How would you use yours? and if you had the option to 'OPT-OUT' of packaging, would you?

#2 - Education

As a business owner and a consumer I wonder, how much education on sustainability should be offered to the customers? How much of a difference would it make to the end purchase if you knew the full cycle of your products?

Thoughts?

#3 - Sustainable Fabric

Panel speaker, Pat-Nie Woo, Partner at KPMG China - touched on the subject of sustainable fabrics. I'm sure some of you will have heard of sustainable fabrics like ECONYL®️(which is made from recycled nylon/ocean waste) , Repreve®️ (which is made from recycled plastic bottles, one pair of leggings can be made from 17 PET bottles) but have you heard of Amni Soul Technology?®️

Amni Soul Technology®️ is the first recyclable and bio-degradeable polyamide yarn to hit the textile industry. What takes most fibres over 30 years to decompose in the landfill, Amni Soul Technology®️ only takes 3-5 years to fully decompose, that is 10x faster than any other apparel that ends in the landfills. What makes Amni Soul Technology®️ different is the way it can decompose in landfill environments, most other biodegradeble fabrics cannot fully decompose in landfill conditions. However, Amni Soul®️ fibres can; it doesnt need light, oxygen or heat to start the decompression process but uses the bacteria found in landfills to start deteriorating. The pros for this innovative fabric is not only its sustainable properties but it is a high quality, breathable, moveable fabric that is perfect for Yoga, Barre, Crossfit, Pilates, HIIT, Hiking, or Zumba.
